About more than twenty years ago, Belgrade was a landmark of success – at least for those living behind the Iron Curtain, who compared their own cities with the prosperous capital of the Yugoslav Federation. The city has a tumultuous history behind it – from the Byzantine and Ottoman occupations, the Nazi or NATO bombings, in the early 90’s. Now, Serbia’s capital, in spite of losing much of its architectural heritage, compensates through vitality and urban force. But above all it compensates through the grandeur of the Kalemagdan castle, over viewing the joining of the rivers Sava and Danube.
